From Concepts to Judgment

Teaching Human–Computer Interaction revealed a recurring pattern: methods are easy to teach, judgment is not. Students and practitioners often look for procedures, but what actually matters is learning how to reason under uncertainty.

Applied HCI work repeatedly shows that guidelines and tools only work when accompanied by critical interpretation. Checklists do not replace understanding; they depend on it.

Evaluation as Practice, Not Ceremony

In practice, evaluation rarely happens under ideal conditions. Time is limited, systems are incomplete, and evidence is partial. The challenge is not following a method, but deciding what counts as evidence and when it is sufficient to act.

This realization shifts evaluation from a compliance exercise to a learning activity, one that evolves over time and adapts to organizational constraints.

Teaching as Knowledge Transfer

Teaching HCI was less about transmitting content and more about exposing how decisions are made:

  • how assumptions are questioned
  • how trade‑offs are acknowledged
  • how failure informs future choices

These moments often informal and contextual, are where expertise is multiplied.

Practice Insight

Across academic teaching, public sector work, and industry practice, one lesson persists:

systems fail when human understanding is treated as secondary.

Multiplying knowledge, therefore, is not about producing more material. It is about sharing how to see, how to judge, and how to remain critical when systems appear to be “working.”
