Human–Computer Interaction as Understanding
Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) is primarily about understanding how people interpret, act, and make sense of systems that mediate everyday life. Interfaces and tools to interact are secondary in the product development lifecycle.
Interactive systems are not neutral. They embody assumptions about users, contexts, and behaviors. When these assumptions fail, friction, exclusion, and error emerge. Not because users are deficient, but because systems are misaligned with human cognition, perception, and judgment.
HCI provides a conceptual foundation to examine this misalignment. It brings together insights from psychology, design, ergonomics, and computer science to study how humans perceive feedback, form mental models, allocate attention, and recover from errors while interacting with digital artifacts.
Accessibility extends this perspective by foregrounding the experiences of people with disabilities, chronic conditions, impairments, and situational constraints. It makes visible needs that are often overlooked and exposes where assumed “average” users do not exist. In this sense, accessibility does not sit alongside HCI as a specialization; it intersects with and deepens usability principles by testing whether interaction concepts truly hold across human diversity.
Beyond Usability
Usability alone is insufficient. Ease of use does not guarantee understanding, trust, or inclusion. Human–computer interaction concerns meaning‑making:
- how people interpret system responses,
- how expectations are shaped, and
- how decisions are influenced by interface behavior.
From this perspective, accessibility is not an add‑on. It is a fundamental test of whether a system acknowledges human diversity in perception, cognition, motor ability, and context of use.
Why Foundations Still Matter
While technologies evolve quickly, human limits remain stable. Concepts such as affordances, feedback, constraints, and evaluation remain relevant because they describe how humans engage with complexity.
These foundations are not methods or recipes. They are lenses, ways of seeing interactive systems more clearly, reasoning about their consequences, and questioning design decisions before they solidify into infrastructure.
